Dr. Sucharitha breaks down obesity and how to prevent it.
1. What exactly is obesity?
Obesity is excessive fat accumulation that causes health impairment and increases the risk of serious health problems.

2. How is it quantified?
Obesity is benchmarked and quantified using the body mass index (BMI), as follows.

3. How does it occur?
Obesity occurs due to an imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. Increasing urbanisation is an important reason of an increase in the rate of obesity. People are used to consuming calorie-dense foods high in fats and sugars.
Other reasons are physical inactivity, sedentary jobs and easier commuting, among others.
5. What are the symptoms of obesity?
Symptoms of obesity include:
- Shortness of breath
- Excess body fat around the waist
- Abnormal sweating
- Sleep problems
- Snoring

5. What are the risks of obesity?
Increase in BMI is a risk factor for non-communicable diseases, such as:
- Coronary artery disease
- Stroke
- Osteoarthritis
- Obstructive sleep apnoea (a condition caused by snoring).
Obesity also causes not only physical-health issues, but also psychiatric problems such as:
- Body image issues
- Low self-esteem and mood disorder
- Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome leading to depression
6. How to prevent obesity?
Obesity can be prevented by actively indulging in regular physical activities and cutting calorie-rich food intake.
Choosing a healthier diet like whole grains, vegetables and protein sources helps in prevention of unwanted fats in our body.
