Versus Holters and Event Monitors

HOLTER

May be wired or wireless, and most commonly between 1 and 3 leads (although 12-lead holters exist, they 're rarely used).

Records beat-to-beat ECG

Used to detect more than 30 kinds of rhythm abnormalities; cannot be used to detect MI.

Taken while the patient is both on the move and at rest, allowing the monitoring of the heart rhythm when the patient is active.

The duration ranges from 1 day to 30 days.

12-LEAD REST ECG

Standard test for measuring your heart's electrical function. Performed while you are lying still, to record your heart's electrical activity from 12 electrodes (sticky patches) on your chest, arms, and legs at the same time.

Primarily used to detect heart attacks (myocardial infarction/MI).

Taken while the patient is at rest.

The duration of the recording is typically 10 seconds.

EVENT MONITOR

(Loop recorder, external loop recorder (ELR), MCT*, etc)

May be wired or wireless, with up to 3 leads.

Does not record continuous data; instead, raises a flag and records 30-to-60-second ECG only in case of an event matching any of the preset events, viz:

1. Atrial fibrillation
2. Ventricular tachycardia
3. Pause
4. Blocks

An internationally acclaimed algorithm on a cloud server analyses and interprets the data and generates the report instantly.

A cardiologist reviews the report and edits the conclusion, if necessary, before releasing it.
