Being an independent, sovereign nation means keeping our destiny in our hands, choosing our own leaders rather than authority in the garb of leadership being thrust upon us; it means getting the returns for the work we put in, rather than the fruits of our toil being shipped abroad to fill the coffers of the oppressor; it means equal rights, respect and opportunity for all.
Most of all, it means the right to dream, achieve, celebrate and rest at peace, without fear and exploitation. But it also means responsibilities: responsibilities as laid out in our constitution, to contribute towards the progress and wellness of our country, to participate and be good citizens, not just passive consumers or observers.
It’s not enough if we live in India. India needs to live in us.

This Independence Day, let’s take pride in who we are, what our history is, and create the kind of future we want, as we’re striving to do at Healthwatch.
Happy 75 years of freedom. Happy Independence Day.
